No Kidding…

Eli!

The New England Giants accomplished the unimaginable: they beat the 2008 New England Patriots.

Eli Manning, the oft-criticized younger brother of one of the game’s greatest-ever players, stood up to the bullies that were the formerly unbeaten Pats. I would elaborate, but for some reason the way Steve Serby says it resonated with me:

Eli Manning will never be more perfect for New York than he was last night, when he was SuperMann, when he stood eyeball-to-eyeball with the great Tom Brady and shot him dead with the whole world watching.

Yes, indeed. Manning stood face-to-face with the “league’s best quarterback” and had the audacity to outperform him. I’m not a Giants fan (Cowboys here; NFC East rivals), but last night everyone who wasn’t a Patriots fan were rooting for the underdog: the New York Giants.

Eli went from a disgraceful entrance into the NFL (long story), to being brutalized by the New York media and fan base for his inconsistency, and headed straight for legendary Big Apple status by dethroning the team that everyone in the world seemed to be gushing over as possibly the greatest team in NFL history. But can the greatest team in NFL history lose the Super Bowl?

No. They can’t.

Therefore the arrogant, boastful, pretentious, and dismissive Patriots will go down as history as that “almost” team. The almost-perfect season. The almost-mythical team. The almost-flawless quarterback. And on and on it goes…

And Eli Manning, in just a few short weeks, has shaken off the monkey from his back. He is no longer Peyton’s little brother. He’s not Archie’s son. He’s not “that other Manning.” He’s Eli Manning: Super Bowl MVP.

Congratulations to the New York Giants. Congratulations to Eli Manning. Congratulations to New York.

And to that “almost” team…HAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!”
